The Vintage Treasure Hunt

I think my little game of Mad Men catch up is getting to me.  As soon as Kate Hudson uttered, "It's vintage, New York City... $35!" about her amazing white fur jacket, I couldn't get it out of my mind.  A few more episodes of Mad Men later, and I found myself at my favorite West Village vintage shop, Star Struck Vintage Clothing.  I got side tracked by the gorgeous gold pendants and baubles near the window, but after 20 minutes of trying on jewelry (and ultimately landing on one must-have gold plated bauble)  I wandered back to their fur section.  Almost immediately I spotted it.  A beautiful white rabbit fur jacket.  It's a little worn, but it was $45.  Typically, I'm anti-fur, but I make an exception for Mongolian Lamb and Rabbit furs, because we eat their meat, so using their fur is simply using every bit of the animal.

For the completely ethical fashionista, faux fur is becoming more and more high quality.  It's gone beyond the world of Wet Seal and H&M and into high fashion doors.  In fact, one of my favorite designers, Adam Lippes, has put a heavy focus on finding luxe faux furs for his contemporary-meets-American-Sportswear colleciton.  Last year I picked up a faux chinchilla vest that is to die for.  With fur making a major statement on the Fall 2009 and 2010 runways, this trend isn't going away soon.  Pick up a vest or scarf to get your feet wet, and embrace the warmth!

Check out celebs spotted in fur and faux fur for chic styling ideas.

Mackintosh® rousay trench coat

$950.00 at J.Crew

It's impossible to open up a magazine this season without seeing at least one spread devoted to the trench.  With the borrowed from the boys look at an all time high, the trench coat is a natural "it" item for the fashion moment.  The thing I love the most about trenches, however, is whether they're trendy or not, they are always in style.  So put some of that hard earned cash towards a timeless staple ladies, and pick up a trench coat.  Bonus, they're coming to the end of their selling season so the chances of finding a chic sale option are pretty good.

Every woman would love to have a Burberry trench.  They have great lines, perfected details, and exquisite quality.  On top of that, Burberry has done a great job reinventing the trench coat wheel season after season.  For those of you who prefer putting their hard earned cash in the bank instead of the closet, below are a few great options with reasonable price tags.

Out and About with Sarah G

I am always impressed by Sarah's innate ability to put together eclectic and chic looks.  Her go to spots for inspirations?  People StyleWatch and WhoWhatWear where she pulls tips from the best dressed celebs. Sarah and I got together tonight to catch up over sangria and tapas at Sala, in Chelsea.  After a few drinks, I convinced my fellow fashionista to let me get a shot of her looking chic and wearing an American Apparel slouchy sweatshirt top, ADAM Lippes silk georgette shorts, and carrying a Foley + Corinna tote.  Bonus, her necklaces were layered gold tone strands that looked expensive, but came from the ever budget friendly H&M.

Benefit Dinner and an Unexpected Lesson in Being Gracious

By The Closet Editor · May 24, 2010 · 0 Comments · 15 Views

Last night I attended a benefit to raise money for street art and performances overseas.  It's so easy to take the arts for granted living in NYC, but in so many cultures the arts are for the wealthy.  This cause brings awareness to that phenomenon and raises money to bring the arts to everyone. Anyway, I unwittingly managed to find the only fashion photographer in the bunch to snap a picture of my girls and me.  As I (somewhat jokingly) commented on has "fashion photog-like skills" he informed me that he was a professional photographer.  As it turns out we have a lot of mutual friends and acquaintances.  Just goes to show you, you never know who you're going to bump into!  (Or, as a non-fashion industry friend pointed out to me - this industry is almost incestuous.)

What were we wearing?  The dinner and dress code were Mediterranean themed (one of my favorite looks).

Me - a floor length, deep v-neck, halter top dress by ADAM Lippes.  Why it works?  Because I love the way it looks when the wind blows and the way it floats behind me when I walk.  I'm also a major maxi dress fan because to me they are the archetype of easy style (natural, wavy bedhead hair, gladiator flats and your look is complete - it's as simple as that.)

Julia - a floor length v-neck dress by Cynthia Rowley in a gorgeous green and coral.  Why it works?  That classic combination of bright greens and beautiful red hair.  Words don't do the look justice really, you just have to see the pictures!   Her chic quotient for the night can be measured in the number of people who commented that she looked like Christina Hendrix from Mad Men.

Jen - a Nanette Lepre mini dress with cut-out and a teeny tiny smattering of coral and turquoise beads.  Why it works?  She got to show off her fabulous curves in a tasteful way.  The fabric and quality of the embellishment made the dress a high fashion option, instead of a low brow go-to (which is so commonly the fate of minis with cutouts).  Way to make it work Jen!
